Most of you may read the title and instantly think that I am going to argue that female teachers are bad. Well I am. Female teachers are inherently bad for the young male student. I am not making a claim that men are better than women, I’m simply saying that males need other males. Males and females tend to have a different teaching style then each other. A male teacher is more likely to stuff their lesson plans with more activities while teaching. They are also more likely to change up their lesson routines. Female teachers, on the other hand, have a tendency to put many work sheets in their lesson plans. These differences wouldn’t be a problem except that young boys and young girls learn in different ways. Young boys tend to get bored rather easily and need to different and new things to keep them interested. This is backed up by the research done by Ali Carr-Chellman as she spoke in TEDTalks. (http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ali_carr_chellman_gaming_to_re_engage_boys_in_learning.html) The male teacher’s style of teaching reengages young boys in learning. It is not the female teachers fault, it is simply that males and females learn differently. It is this difference in learning that leads me to believe that it is instrumental to make sure that we increase the number of male teachers that are employed in elementary schools.
Very interesting! As I was reading, I could remember this all happening exactly. I didn't get male teachers until high school, but their classes were significantly different than what I had previously. Would if be more beneficial for boys and girls to strictly have teachers of the same sex, or is a mixture just as effective?
ReplyDeleteI dont think that you can exactly generalize male and female teaching methods. I think it depends on their credentials and where they went to school. Also, how they like t learn probably plays a big influence on how they teach. yes, I agree, not all teaching methods help every type of student, but I do not think that it is fair to oversimplify it into the categories of male and females. You may have had teachers that taught in a certain way, but that does not mean that they are unsuccessful in they way they teach.
ReplyDeleteI agree that males and females have different teaching styles, however, so does every single teacher. I have had classes with female teachers that have been boring and, like you said, without any interactive activities. I have also had female teachers who really know and love what they're teaching which is beneficial for the student's learning. As for male teachers, I typically have loved all my teachers who have been male. They're usually more laid back and want to be your friend. However, I have had male teachers that abuse this quality and I end up learning nothing. If male teachers are better especially for male students, then how come the ratio between male and female teachers are so skewed especially in high school? I only had three male teachers in my high school career and will have a majority of male teachers in college (since I am a business major). So how do we get more male teachers to teach in high school, middle school, and even elementary school?
